Global Payments Modernisation Platform
Global Payments Modernisation Platform
A global systemically important bank needed to modernise its payments architecture against fixed regulatory deadlines, while rising transaction volumes and a complex legacy estate made change slow, costly and risky.
Marionete designed and delivered a distributed payments orchestration platform, now live across 54 countries, enabling ISO 20022 compliance, real-time payments and incremental legacy modernisation without a wholesale rebuild.
Explore how we do it
The platform is a ground-up redesign of payments orchestration around three ideas: modular components, distributed processing, and an asynchronous, event-driven core.
Rather than replacing existing payment engines and core banking systems, Marionete built an orchestration layer that works across them. Business functionality is separated from the complexity of the underlying infrastructure, so the teams delivering payment products are not also carrying the burden of building ultra-reliable distributed systems. Both move faster as a result.
Payment processing, transformation, enrichment, automatic recovery, flow control, batching and un-batching, payment initiation, liquidity management, distribution, monitoring and reporting are all delivered as reusable, pluggable components — a library of patterns teams compose rather than rebuild.
Orchestration is expressed as executable code in a language business analysts, developers, testers and operations can all read. That shared vocabulary is what allows change to be reasoned about quickly, and it is the difference between an integration architecture that lives in flow diagrams and one that lives in version control.
The result is a practical modernisation path. Monolithic functions can be decomposed into cloud-native services incrementally, at a pace the bank controls, without the cost and risk of wholesale replacement. The asynchronous-first design delivers the scalability and resilience real-time payments demand, and gives operations and business teams near real-time visibility across every payment flow.
Main features
- Designed and built a distributed payments orchestration platform for a high-volume, mission-critical global banking environment.
- Delivered an ISO 20022 processing layer across the existing payments estate, supporting industry migration against fixed regulatory deadlines.
- Made payment capabilities modular and pluggable, so new products ship without redesigning the wider platform.
- Built an asynchronous, event-driven core with no single point of failure — scalability and resilience designed in rather than bolted on.
- Enabled payment engine, vendor and core banking functions to be decomposed progressively into reusable services.
- Expressed orchestration as executable code in a shared, human-readable language, giving business, engineering and operations one vocabulary.
- Applied everything-as-code practices across testing, deployment, monitoring, recovery and environment management, for controlled and reproducible change.
